fun facts about the author

I grew up riding horses bareback (from the time I was age 3), and I still love riding bareback.
My first best friend weighed about 1,000 pounds. Her name was Sugar. (And she was a pinto!)
My family has two dogs who are sisters, but one is almost twice as big as the other. The little one is called Moxie, and the big one is Munch.
I live in the woods with my family and pets. But we often get uninvited guests—like a big raccoon, a pesky squirrel, and bats who swooped down the chimney. (My husband usually shows them the door.)
My husband Joe and I got to ride horses with a Navaho guide on a Navaho reservation this year. We galloped all over Monument Valley (including New Mexico, Utah, and Arizona).
Winnie Willis is a 12-year-old horse gentler. She answers questions from horse owners trying to handle difficult horses.
Jack Willis is Winnie’s father. He is an inventor and is always looking for his next great invention.
Lizzy Willis is Winnie’s sister. Lizzy is 11, just one year younger than Winne. Lizzy loves lizards and cooking different food. Her faith holds her family together.
Calvin (Catman) Coolidge is Winnie’s eighth-grade friend who loves cats. He also loves anything from the ‘60s.
Bart and Claire Coolidge are Catman’s parents. They are eccentric but lovable. The constantly enter contests to support their family.
Pat Haven is the owner of the animal helpline Winnie works for part-time. Pat is a good friend to Winnie.
